Candida Höfer

  • 1944

In 1979, while still studying photography under Bernd Becher in Düsseldorf, Candida Hofer started photographing the interiors of public spaces, such as museums, libraries, archives, theaters, offices, banks, waiting rooms and subway stations, using only natural light. She personifies the place, enabling the surfaces to be read and interpreted like an epidermis, a living and pulsing being, almost palpable, as if emptied of any human presence for just a single instant. And in fact each photograph is always deliberately taken in the absence of any human presence, enabling us to have an exclusive relationship with the interior, as if each of us were alone there and at that moment.
