Jannis Kounellis

In Untitled (Twelve Live Horses, 1969), a celebrated work that has now become legendary, Kounellis exhibited live horses in the Galleria L’Attico in Rome. The horses were tied and displayed around the perimeter of the four walls forming the rectangular exhibition space. The rectangular arrangement replicated the traditional geometric form of the painting as a defined form in Western history, hence this visual unity strongly referred to and evoked the idea of a painting, without being one in technical-material terms.
