Le prime tavole di John McCracken risalgono al 1966. Si tratta di assi in compensato rivestite in vetroresina e resina poliestere colorate, levigate e cerate fino a ottenere una superficie perfettamente lucida e riflettente. Monocromatiche, queste opere sono concepite per apparire come se il colore stesso fosse il materiale di cui sono fatte.
