Barry Le Va is interested in the way things are located in space, how they connect, and how they come to be grouped. He sees sculpture as formed from fragments, elements that are either separated or brought together in a space, and tied to each other by related or unrelated concerns. He wants to eliminate the sense of a sculpture as a whole, finished or resolved object, so that viewers concentrate instead on the parts.
