During his time in the military, Tom Wesselmann became interested in drawing, exploring satirical themes in caricatures and cartoons. The contact with the New York art world encouraged him to diversify his work and create small collages using torn paper and non-conventional materials. In the early 1960s the scale of his work increased, leading to larger and more aggressive compositions incorporating ordinary domestic objects, magazine cut-outs and advertising images. During this period, his work also became increasingly eroticized. Wesselmann explored the classic themes of the nude and still life, of which the works shown here are examples.
